Earwax (also called cerumen) is normal. It is designed to protect your ears from dirt and germs and only needs to be removed if it is causing a problem. It is made up of dead skin, hair and cerumen which is produced by glands in your ear.
Microsuction is the safest and most effective method of removing ear wax from the ear. The procedure is carried out using a high grade surgical microscope enabling the practitioner to see what they are doing at all times and enable thorough examination of the ear canal, and tympanic membrane (ear drum). A small device attached to a suction unit is used to gently remove any wax or foreign objects from the ear canal. If the wax is near the entrance of the ear canal other instruments may be used such as wax hooks or similar devices.
Microsuction is generally painless. It can be noisy and the ear canal can be sensitive but the majority of the time we are able to avoid touching the ear canal as we use a microscope that enables us to see exactly what we are doing.
Our ear wax consultations cost £50 and include a consultation, treatment and recommendations for preventing further build up of wax.
Earwax can often reaccumulate for a variety of reasons. During your consultation we will discuss possible causes for earwax build up, preventative measures and ongoing care. Some people find that they like to have their ears clean on a regular basis and can book a follow up visit at their appointment, or book a future appointment if they have problems in the future.
Yes. Microsuction is the safest method of removing something from the ear. If you have had problems with your ears in the past e.g. perforations or surgery you should not have syringing or irrigation but microsuction is very safe
We ask that you use olive oil drops twice a day for 3 days prior to your appointment. This helps to soften the wax and aids in the removal by microsuction.
In the majority of cases we are able to remove earwax at your first visit. However if we are unable to do this because the wax is too hard or for some other reason we will advise you on what to do and book you in for a further appointment free of charge.
Earwax can often reaccumulate. At your consultation I will discuss possible causes and offer advice on prevention and ongoing care. If this is an ongoing issue some people like to book appointments to be seen on a regular basis which can be discussed at you visit.
